Patterns & PurposeĀ

In "Design for the Real World," Papanek defines design as "the conscious effort to impose meaningful order." Yet when he dismisses a honeycomb as undesigned, he reveals a curious contradiction. His definition presupposes that meaning can only flow from human intent. But who granted us the authority to determine what constitutes meaningful order? A honeycomb's hexagonal structure achieves perfect material efficiency, structural stability, and space utilization - if this isn't meaningful order, what is? Perhaps we've confused the source of meaning with meaning itself. When we look at nature's intricate patterns, we're not just seeing order, we're seeing purpose inscribed into the fabric of creation.
